There are about 40 Swan Valley wineries in the wine region called the Swan Valley. The Swan Valley is within the bounds of the Perth metropolitan area.
The Australian Geographical Indication "Swan Valley" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 6 January 2003, after the state government proclaimed the area protected for viticulture and tourism with the Swan Valley planning act 1995. This Act is currently under review.
Of the 40 Swan Valley wineries about half actually ferment grapes into wine, the rest have different business models, where the grapes are processed at contract facilities. All have tasting rooms where you can taste a range of the swan valleys best wines.
Harris Organic Wines' Swan Valley property is in Baskerville, at the top of the Swan Valley Wine region, and was part of the district originally established for grape growing during the early 1920s by people from the Dalmatian area of southern Europe (on the Adriatic coast). These migrant settlers were to the Swan Valley as German settlers were to the Barossa Valley area of South Australia.
In fact there are still many well-known and highly regarded second and third generation vignerons operating in the Swan Valley today, particularly in Memorial Avenue. When you visit you will see winemakers display their fine wines through the art of winemaking for their handmade wine.
When you visit the best Swan Valley wineriies make your first stop Memorial Avenue. There were six wineries but now only four wineries in Memorial Avenue. The list
of wines is extensive. From sparkling table wines and dry table wines to the rich sticky fortified sweet styles Perth's Swan Valley is renown for. All the wineries have award
winning wines from the Swan Valley Wine Show or other Western Australian shows, making the best wines in Perth.
