Queensland Container Deposit Scheme
Queensland has initiated a Container Deposit Scheme.
Any producer/distributor sending wine to QLD after this date must ensure the wine is labelled accordingly, ie with a mark detailing the refund information AND a barcode. failure to comply may result in fines of up to $77,000.00. As you can imagine, small print runs of QLD-specific labels are impractical and uneconomic for smaller producers, who are hit disproportionately by these measures. From my winery, for example, I have contacted my QLD customers to let them know I cannot send them wine after November 1st.
What does this mean for a sole trader small producer?
For me to provide to you the Queensland consumer it will mean the following.
- Register for a bar code. - We have never had a label bar code.
- Register with the government scheme - Besides the paperwork, we will be required to pay 13 cents per bottle sold.
- Print labels specifically for Queensland. Artwork for 16 labels for about 50 bottles sold per year, to be applied by hand is ridiculous.
What do you do if you have bought a bottle from Harris Organic wines cellar door and take it home to Queensland?
